While nursery schools should still concern themselves with providing exploratory activities that encourage physical, intellectual, social and moral development.
There is evidence both of the reading readiness of many nursery age children and of the interest young children take in recognising and making letters - particularly of their own names. Many parents use books with their children from babyhood, and children are eager to make sense of this aspect of the world.
So while nursery school teachers are not directly and didactically teaching reading and writing, there is a need for them to adopt the roles of providing, reading, modelling, interacting, using and talking about literacy. This book sets out the models of good practice in nursery schools and pays special attention to the reading of stories to young children.
