Collaboration is internationally recognised as essential to widening participation but too often turns out to be time-consuming, expensive and to reinforce stereotypical thinking. This need not be so. The editors have drawn together the work of experts who illustrate just how effective collaboration practices can be in extending higher education to traditionally underrepresented groups.

Contributors come from across Europe and from Australia, South Africa and the United States and range from cross-sector and interdisciplinary approaches to inter-university initiatives and to dedicated projects for specific groups such as people with a disability, low-income groups and ex-offenders.

By establishing what progress has been made and what works, the book establishes the framework for successfully widening participation in higher education in the future. It is a fitting tribute to Maggie Woodrow, the founder of the European Access Network. The editors, from the UK and Sweden, are members of the European Access Network and actively engages in widening participation.
